Alfran’s collaboration in the first shutdown of the Fuel 2 unit at La Rábida Refinery

refinería la rábida

The La Rábida de Cepsa Refinery, located in Palos de la Frontera (Huelva), undertook the first official scheduled shutdown of the Fuel 2 plant during the month of June, since it began its production in 2010. To carry out the scheduled works for the shutdown, an average of 2,000 workers per day of contractors have been counted, plus Cepsa’s own staff.

ALFRAN has collaborated in this shutdown of the La Rábida Refinery in the elimination, supply and installation of the new refractory of the NKH1 furnace roof of the Hidrocraking unit. Originally installed in 2008, it began to come off during the current operating cycle of the plant. The new refractory lining responds to a better construction design, as well as the use of new materials. The new installation consists of a double layer based on insulating block in contact with the sheet and insulating refractory concrete in hot face. The duration of the work was 10 days in double shift. Thus, the milestones requested by CEPSA in its planning were met successfully. ALFRAN helped achieve the goal of zero accidents, thanks to the training and awareness of its staff.

For CEPSA this shutdown has had special relevance. Not only for the volume of work carried out, maintenance and inspection, but also for the execution of new projects.

Great coordination work

The development of a shutdown requires a great work of coordination of all the units and departments that participate. From the Purchase and Warehouse area to the Operations area, through Maintenance, Engineering, Environment … and, of course, Safety.

This coordination, together with the rigorous control of daily tasks, is essential to guarantee the safety of people and facilities. In this sense, it must be remembered that during the La Rábida refinery shutdown there has been no accident or incident. The zero index of accident rate, constant objective and essential value of ALFRAN has been fulfilled.

From ALFRAN, we are proud to collaborate, once again, with CEPSA in this type of projects.
